As part of an ongoing series, the Cowra Guardian asked Di about her life, career and her beginnings across the ditch.
How/why did you begin a career in early and middle childhood education and care and how long have you been working within the sector?
I have been working within the sector for 20 years and 15 of those with Cowra Early Childhood Services.
Early childhood was something I had always thought about doing, and earlier in life the opportunity did not arise.
After spending a large part of my working life employed in the shearing industry, once I had my own child, I was able to fulfil my dream of obtaining an early childhood qualification.
I began a traineeship at Blackall Limited Hours Daycare and obtained a Certificate III in Early Childhood as I was working.
What inspires you most about working with children in the early and middle years?
Being involved in children's lives as they grow and develop.
Building relationships with the children and their families within our services gives me great satisfaction.
Without naming names, are there any memorable children you've looked after/taught that stand out to you and why?
There have been many memorable children throughout my career that I still treasure the relationships I have with them.
Having worked with children throughout the early years and now with school aged children has allowed me to be a part of their life for many years.
Some of these children are now joining the workforce themselves and I'm proud to have been a part of their life journey.
How has early/middle childhood changed over the years?
During my career the sector has become more regulated to ensure that children are educated and cared for in safe and secure environments.
This has impacted the role of educators with requirements for qualifications and administrative tasks.
What would be your advice for people looking at a career in early or middle childhood?
Whatever your age, take the plunge, you will love it!

I was born in New Zealand and came to Australia in my 30s for a three-month working holiday and I am still here, 25 years later.
