A determined half century from Cowra captain Michael Curtale wasn't enough to lift his side to victory over Parkes in the opening round of the Western Zone Premier League on Sunday.

Played at Woodward Oval, Parkes restricted Cowra to 145 after electing to bat first and posting 7-219 thanks largely to opener Myles Smith (86) and some late hitting from Anthony Riach (55).
In reply, Curtale joined Cowra opener Mikey McNamara (42) after two early wickets fell leaving the visitors 2-25 after 16 overs.
The pair worked hard to spark Cowra's revival and made 70 runs for the third wicket, however McNamara departed just short of his half century when he edged a Riach (2-34) delivery.
The required run rate started edging eight runs an over inside the final 15 overs and wickets began tumbling as a result.
A brilliant outfield catch from Parkes' Zac Bayliss removed Curtale for 63 and left Cowra needing close to 80 runs with three wickets in hand.
Blake Smith (3-33) cleaned up the tale to clinch victory for Parkes.
Earlier in the day, new ball bowler Callan Taylor picked up 2-33 from his 10 overs, while Curtale chimed in with 2-29 from eight.
Josh Carmody and Emerson Baratto picked up one wicket each.
Cowra's next game will be at home on October 27 against Midwest.
Midwest suffered an 83 run loss to Dubbo in their weekend season opener, while Bathurst beat Orange.
