The sculpture was hand made by Mr Takahashi Sugimura of Japan.
Mr Sugimura is one the most well known and famous stone sculpters in Japan and has also made a stone sculpture for the Penrith Art Galley as he was commissioned by Fujieda City in Japan (sister cities with Penrith) to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the relationship.
Mr Sugimura is also well known for stone figurines throughout Japan and Asia.
This basin was purposely made for a special tea ceremony at Penrith Council by Mrs Suzuki and Mr. Sugimura made the basin a gift to Mrs. Suzki at the conclusion of the tea ceremony.
Mrs Suzuki said that she felt it was very appropriate for the hand basin to be located in the Cowra Japanese Garden as these basins are placed near to a traditional Tea House within a Garden in Japan.
