Over the past six months this team of 8 local Martial Artists have been competing in qualifying tournaments in Dubbo, Sydney and the Australian Capital Territory to, firstly, qualify to compete in the New South Wales and ACT State Championships and then to gain their place at this weekend's Australian Championships.
Locally based KRMAS Dojo Instructor Shidoin David Simpson was very pleased with how well the students had performed to date. "I have been teaching, competing and coaching competitors for over 10 years and it is always a joy to see a group such as these students excel in their chosen sport.
These students have shown great dedication to their training and have competed with respect for their fellow competitors and referees. It is great to see them having a chance to test their abilities on a larger stage.'
Shidoin David went on to say that this weekend's Championships are also a selection event for the Australian Team which will compete at the World Championships in Japan next year and possibly at events in New Zealand and the United States as well.
The events to be contested over the weekend include Forms (or Kata), Point Sparring, Full Contact Sparring, Junior Sumo and Sword Sparring events. The Cowra Dojo will be represented in each of these events in various age and experience categories.
When asked for his opinion on how the locals will fare at the Championships Shidoin David replied "each member of the team has already faced some fierce competition to reach this stage. They are dedicated to their martial arts and to their training. There is no reason why they should not be expected to medal at this event and possibly even be considered for the Australian Team, either now or in the future."
In conclusion Shidoin David also expressed his thanks to the dedicated parents of these competitors who make it possible for them to attend events such as these Championships. "Without the support of parents our junior athletes just cannot hope to attend and experience such competitions."
