Pauline Gill from Tapua Labrador Retrievers in Woodstock said many families don't realise that dogs are for life, and are not just a Christmas present.
"Please do not 'gift' a puppy for Christmas or a birthday without discussing the dog needs with the family," she said.
Ms Gill urged those thinking of purchasing or adopting a dog to consider the following:
- Breed - why a certain breed compared to any other?
- Does the family understand the collective responsibility of raising a puppy and are they prepared to make the joint effort?
- Does the house/property have secure fencing, weatherproof housing outside or a crate inside?
- Is the family aware of the community and local council requirements of owning a dog and other financial commitments such as vaccinations, registration, worming, desexing?
- Is the family committed to the ongoing training and work needed to create a responsible family companion that will live harmoniously with the household?
- Children - are the kids educated about how to behave around a dog? "Pet Town" is an educational website aimed at kids - www.pets.nsw.gov.au/
- And most important, is the family prepared to love and care for this puppy for life? To be ready to unconditionally love him or her and value the faith, loyalty and acceptance a dog offers unconditionally? And in return, honour and nuture him or her until they pass away in old age?
