For St Raphael's in Cowra the next 12 months is about acknowledging the school's past and looking forward to leaving a legacy for the future.
... it started with a dream ...
Our story starts with two interesting young women and educators. In 1870 Miss Brigid Martin arrived in Cowra.
She was originally from Kelso and was able to teach all subjects including religion. Parishioners guaranteed Miss Martin's salary.
She set up school in the original Catholic Church with the sanctuary screened off.
This beautiful stone church was built completely out of stone, in true Gothic style, with its arches, windows and buttresses.
It is restored and forms part of the St Raphael's school complex housing the Heritage Centre.
Miss Purcell succeeded Miss Martin in 1876.
An accomplished singer and organist Miss Purcell sang in many church concerts.
In 1878 Miss Purcell married E.J. Collins, a bank manager, who lived in Cowra.
As the school continues preparations for this year's celebrations we will continue to publish historical items depicting its early days.
Please contact the school office if you have archival photos and mementos for us to document.
We will continue sharing the St Raphael's story throughout the year as the school builds up to its 150th Anniversary /Reunion celebrations on the June long weekend this year (5-7 June).
