Speaking after a weekend in which Cowra's under 12s and under 14s both played off in grand finals, AFLCW Development Officer Casey White believed there were obvious positives in reaching out to local kids in the form of a four week Auskick initiative.
Auskick is the AFL's introductory form of Australian Rules, a non-contact variation on the game targeted at children five to 12 years of age that emphasises fun and skill development.
"The purpose of our game development programs is to promote the game of AFL and encourage not only people who already play, but new participants to give the sport a try," White said of the sessions.
"Being August as well, it's an opportunity, while the other sports have wound down, for these kids to give it a try as a second option looking into the new year."
White said the next steps for kids who enjoyed the the month-long introduction to the game include the school-based Paul Kelly Cup for students in years five to seven, and suggested parents of younger kids should contact the Cowra Blues about future Auskick programmes.
With Wednesday's session involving a parents versus kids match, White said he encouraged any undecided local parents and kids to try the game out.
"You don't need any prior experience to play AFL, and in fact a lot of the skills that the kids have learnt playing other sports quite easily translate across into AFL," he said.
