Representatives from Cowra Council, along with the Youth Ambassadors and Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, joined the Ambassador to Japan, Reiichiro Takahashi to plant a cherry blossom tree in Brougham Park.
Ambassador Takahashi said he was honoured that Japan was again chosen as the guest nation.
"The people of the Cowra community, I think, made a very great contribution to the reconciliation process and now here we are, after the 70 plus years, the friendship between the Cowra community and Japanese people is rock solid," the Ambassador said.
"We are very pleased to be once again chosen as a guest country this year."
Ambassador Takahashi said he was looking forward to seeing if the Festival would create further economic ties between Australia and Japan, in particular with Cowra wineries.
"I hope this Festival will be another opportunity for us to get to know each other," he said.
