Bathurst Local Court has ordered a 48-year-old man to undergo a psychological assessment after an incident that occurred in Canowindra on Friday.

Bathurst Police Inspector Gerard Powell said the alleged offender had now been charged with eight offences.
“The man was arrested on August 17 and has been charged with using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, three counts of assaulting police in the execution of their duty causing actual bodily harm, common assault, two counts of malicious damage and damaging property by fire,” Inspector Powell said.
“The man appeared before the registrar of Bathurst Local Court on August 18 and is under order for a psychological assessment.”
A police officer was taken to hospital after the incident which saw Fire and Rescue NSW and police called to Robinson Street in Canowindra at 9am on August 17.
They were responding to reports of a house on fire.
According to Fire and Rescue NSW Central West Zone Commander, Superintendent Brett Jackson a house was not on fire when the Canowindra brigade arrived at the scene but they were confronted by a man carrying a container of fuel.
Supt Jackson described the man as “quite aggressive”.
Police will allege that the man smashed the driver’s side window of the fire truck when it arrived shortly after 9am. He also smashed a police car window.
“Our officers withdrew to a safe location and waited for police to arrive,” Supt Jackson said.
When police arrived they found a man carrying a plastic container in a nearby street.
A male senior constable received burns to his face and other injuries while a male sergeant was also assaulted.
The senior constable was taken to Cowra Hospital for further treatment and medical checks.
He was released later that day.
