The winner of the Calleen Art Award will receive prize money of $20,000, through the support of the Calleen Trust.
The winner will be announced by the award judge Michael Hedger, Director Manly Art Gallery and Museum and guest speaker to welcome visitors on the night is Cr Ray Walsh representing the Mayor, Cr Bill West.
Visitors to the exhibition during the five weeks it’s open can vote for their favourite painting in the People’s Choice Award (non-acquisitive) and the artist with the most votes will receive $500 in prize money courtesy of the Friends of the Cowra Regional Art Gallery.
The Calleen Art Award was founded in 1977 by Cowra arts patron Patricia Fagan OAM as an acquisitive art prize. During the past 41 years this prestigious award has grown into a prominent art prize through the continued support of the Callen Trust.
The Calleen Art Award is open to original paintings in any style or subject and for adjudication purposes using any traditional painting medium such as acrylic, oil or watercolour (other traditional “mixed media” may be used to a lesser extent).
The winning works acquired since 1977 form the splendid Calleen Collection, the foundation collection of the Cowra Regional Art Gallery.
The 2018 Awards exhibition features a diverse collection of artworks including paintings by mid career artists and new exciting artistic talent.
This year’s finalists were selected by a panel of art professionals from over 200 entries received from around Australia.
The Calleen Art Award opening night is a significant cultural highlight in the region and promises to be a memorable and enjoyable art experience.
The evening will be enhanced by the talents of young musicians from Sydney Conservatorium of Music who will perform as you view the exhibition
Entry to the opening and exhibition preview is $15 pp ($10 concession for pensioners and Friends of the Gallery members) including drinks and canapés, and the chance to win a lucky door prize.
All proceeds will go to the Friends of the Gallery to purchase art works for the Gallery collection.
The 2018 Calleen Art Award exhibition continues at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery, 77 Darling Street to Sunday, June 10. Gallery hours; Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday 2pm to 4pm.
