In addition to the driving ban Andrew Thomas Peel, 47, of Smith Street will be required to place an interlock device in his vehicle for 12 months after his driving ban expires.
Mr O'Brien also fined Peel $400 and placed him on a Community Corrections Order for 12 months.
Peel returned the positive reading at a random breath testing stop on Redfern Street at 11.50am on December 18 last year.
He told police he had consumed five 375ml stubbies of full strength beer between 9am and 11.45am that morning at his residence.
"This is a serious offence," Mr O'Brien told Peel.
"You will not be going to prison today but you'd have to be completely shut out not to know this offence is one that is all too prevalent.
"Recent news reports highlight tragedy that can occur. You had a large number of drinks and then immediately drove.
"Drinking alcohol is not an offence, but getting behind the wheel after drinking is," Mr O'Brien said.
Solicitor for Peel, Mr Johnson, told the court his client suffered a cognitive injury, was on a disability pension but took responsibility for his drink driving charge.
"I've suggested to him that he sell the car," Mr Johnson told the court.
