Services Club president Ken Apps presented the award to Hayes, who has excelled in his sport throughout the last 12 months.
He was captain of the Football NSW Country squad at the National Youth Championships, and was also a member of the 16-person NSW's Football's Talented Sports Program, which serves as a development pathway for future matches.
I feel honoured to be recognised.
- Cowra Services Club Scholarship winner Clayton Hayes
Earlier this year, Hayes also joined up with the Gungahlin United Football Club, after having earlier trialled with both Gungahlin and Belconnen United.
Having chosen the former, Hayes now travels more than 1000kms per week to pursue his sport, fitting in referee duties at junior level for Cowra District Soccer Club when he can.
Prior to his current commitments in the ACT, Hayes captained the Western Mariners under 14s team in 2018, playing up on multiples occasions with the Under 15s (15 times) and 16s sides (10 times).
Hayes was eventually voted player's player by his team mates at the Under 14s' 2018 end of year awards.
Despite clearly being a little nervous to speak in front of such a big crowd, Hayes was grateful to receive the award.
"I would like to thank the Sportsperson of the Year committee for nominating me for the scholarship," he said.
"I feel honoured to be recognised... I would particularly like to thank my clubs and those who have supported me."
He also expressed gratitude towards his cohort of friends and family present at the awards presentation.
"A big thank you to everyone who has come along to support me tonight," he said.
