Anointed in an awards ceremony at the Cowra Services Club, Seears beat out 11 other candidates to claim the award, including last year's winner, hang glider Guy Hubbard.
An exceptional marksmen with several titles to his names, Seears' record speaks for itself.
It's amazing the amount of talent we have in Cowra.
- Matt Seears
Selected as part of the Australian representative team for the Metallic Silhouette World Championships in Finland, it was there that Seears made an unimpeachable case to be this year's award winner.
Part of a gold medal winning Australian team, Seears also took home the Overall Four Match Aggregate gold medal as well as three silver medals and two bronze medals.
The shooter backed that achievement up earlier this year, taking home Overall Four Match Aggregate gold medal and teams gold medal while representing NSW at the Australian national championships.
Despite qualifying for this year's world champs, Seears has decided to step back, citing the intensive time commitment the sport requires.
"It's an 18 month commitment... I will probably take two to three years off," he said to the Cowra Guardian at the time.
"I will probably just shoot at Nationals and club shoots."
Regardless, Seears was clearly grateful to receive the award, reflecting on the breadth of sporting achievement in the town when he took to the stage to accept the honour.
"I've been to... five or six of these awards now and every year, it's amazing the amount of talent we have in Cowra with a different variety of sports."
While Seears thanked the committee and principal sponsors for their help he also paid tribute to his family, particularly emphasising the support of his wife.
"It's a pretty big ask for what I do," Seears observed.
"She's got to look after three kids and she ran my business last year while I was in Finland competing.
"I'd like to thank her and thank the kids."
