When the Andrew Molloy-trained Zarhron takes to the field in Sunday’s Cowra Japan Cup, it not only has the weight of history on its shoulders – a potential record-breaking fifth straight win – but it also will literally carry that history onto the track.
The nine-year-old Brown Gelding will carry 61 kg into the 1200m handicapped sprint, the most of any starter.
While Zarhron is five wins from seven starts over races at 1200 metres, it has only placed as high as fifth in its last three starts.
However, in last year’s race, a similarly lean form line was also eviscerated on the day.
Molloy also has two other runners at this year’s event: Welcome Art will be piloted by jockey Billy Owen in the 1700m Cowra Cup, while Matthew Cahill will ride Valarian in the 1200m Maiden Handicap.
Local trainers Ken and Danny Parsons will also have several horses competing in the event.
