Corey McCoy from Young will be putting his whipcracking talents on display at the Show on Sunday, March 4.
Corey’s father Craig said his son developed an interest in whipcracking from a young age.
“We’ve always had horses and there are whips lying around all over the place,” Craig said.
“He’s been keen since he was old enough and could pick one up.”
Craig said he then taught Corey a few tricks with the whip.
“Corey far surpassed me and what I know, it’s something he's always wanted to do,” he said.
“He practices fairly well.”
Corey, whose family hails from Young and Bendick Murrell, first discovered whipcracking when the family attended the Deni Ute Muster.
“We have a mobile clothes business and spend five months in the Northern Territory and Queensland each year,” Craig said.
“We went over to watch the Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Assocation (AWPA) NSW Championships and Corey entered the novice competition.
“A fella rang us and offered us membership for 12 months because of how well he cracked whips for being self-taught.”
Corey has gone from strength to strength with his whipcracking and now has a number of titles to his name.
“He’s the current AWPA Tasmanian and Victoria champion for juveniles 12 years and under,” Craig said.
“He is also the Queensland Plaiters and Whipcrackers Association junior champion.”
When asked if whipcracking is in Corey’s future, Craig said his heart lies in a agricultural-based career.
“He wants to own a station in Queensland,” he said.
“But he’s also is looking at the Australian Titles at the Royal Easter Show on April 3, he’s keen for that.”
However Craig says his son has shown an enthusiasm for whipcracking he believes will last for a very long time.
“I can't see him stopping, he’s been asked to do a few shows around the place,” Craig said.
“It's a bit of extra pocket money for him.”
You can catch Corey and plenty more events and activities at the 2018 Koorawatha Show on Sunday, March 4.
