Neither team had lost a game since Cowra's defeat by the same side in round one of the competition and everything pointed to this being a cracker of a game.
Neither team let the large crowd down with a fast paced game full of big hits and decisive moments.
The evenness of the teams looked like it was going to produce a scoreless first half until right on the bell outside centre Mitchell Budge crossed over next to the posts.
Five eighth Jacob McNaught slotted the conversion and Cowra went to the break seven nil up.
Another converted try to Budge soon after the resumption of play had Cowra looking the goods at 14 to nil.
You don't finish the regular season undefeated without reason and Mudgee showed their class by coming back at Cowra hard.
A converted try to the locals was followed by two more unconverted tries and suddenly the home team found themselves ahead by 17 points to 14.
Cowra showed their fortitude at this stage as Mitchell Budge crossed for his third try of the day to put Cowra up by 19 to 17 with 12 minutes remaining.
Up steps captain and half back Sam Apps from the base of a ruck to step past several defenders and score under the posts with nine minutes left on the clock.
The conversion would have put Cowra out of reach of a converted try but Mudgee in their desperation charged down the conversion attempt to leave Cowra ahead 24 to 17.
Mudgee threw everything at Cowra at this stage and crossed for another try late in the game.
A successful conversion would take the game into extra time but the attempt swung wide.
Cowra managed to hang on for the final minutes of injury time to score a well deserved 24 to 22 victory.
Cowra were by no means at their best but a victory over undefeated opposition on their own track at the far end of the zone ranks as the highlight of their season to date.
Cowra had several standouts up front.
Props Jake Cannard and Nick Dix, lock Wade Newton and back rowers Bryce Taylor and Riley Turner all worked tirelessly all game.
In the backs Sam Apps, Jacob McNaught, Mitchell Budge, Jamie Sinclair and Drew Johnstone stood out.
Everyone gave their all and a happy bunch of footballers made their way back to Cowra with their dedicated parents.
The side now has two weeks to prepare for the Grand Final in Narromine on August 30th.
Several areas to focus on at training which if applied should see a much better performance on the big day.
Get yourself organised and come and support the boys in their final game of junior rugby.
