C Grade Soccer: Tough Loss to Waratahs

In a hard-fought contest, C Grade went down 2-1 to Waratahs over the weekend. Despite a narrow defeat, coach Adam Gambrill and team members are confident that improvement is just around the corner.

Whilst the match was a close one, Mr Gambrill felt it was tough to pinpoint exactly where things went wrong, but acknowledged that there is plenty to work on. "We're still trying to find our groove as a team, but we've got a lot of talent, and I'm confident we'll get there soon," he said.

Key adjustments for the game were centered on finding a rhythm, but the team lacked communication and structure throughout. "We need to work on talking more and getting our structure back," Mr Gambrill added.

The team's lone goal came from a strong individual effort by Connor Munroe, who battled hard for the ball before sending a pinpoint pass to Toby Croker, who finished with composure. Meanwhile, keeper Mitchell Cartwright showed great determination after taking a nasty knee to the head, returning to the field after a short break to finish the game. "It was great to see him show such grit," said Mr Gambrill, adding that backup keeper Levi Strange also performed admirably in Cartwright's absence.

The team also faced a unique challenge due to a shortage of referees in Orange, with only one centre referee available for the game. This gave the opposition an advantage in the game’s flow, but the team plans to address this aspect going forward.

Though the loss stung, the team remains positive. "Losing always affects confidence, but it’s up to me and the leadership group to lift the morale and get everyone back on track. We’re still in a good spot," Mr Gambrill concluded.

Looking ahead, the team will focus on communication, passing, and overall structure to improve their game.

Women’s Soccer: Dominant 5-0 Victory Over CYMs

The Women’s team walked away with a 5-0 win over CYMs this past weekend, though Coach noted the match wasn’t without its challenges.

"It was a scrappy game," said Mitchell Thompson. "We didn’t play our best, but the goals came from consistent pressure on the opposition, even when we weren’t at our peak." Despite not finding their rhythm, the team managed to dominate the scoreboard, thanks in part to a few positional changes and strong individual efforts.

Standout performances included Amelia Cranney, who won Player of the Match in her senior debut. "Her work rate was massive," said Thompson, adding that Cranney looked right at home on the field. Also noteworthy was Allison Buttigieg, who led the back line with determination, and goalkeeper Linda Woods, who stayed sharp despite being rarely tested.

The team did struggle with CYMs’ defensive tactics, as the opposition packed the box whenever the Women’s team attacked. "It made it tough to break through," the Coach said. "We need to improve on how we approach those kinds of situations, keeping our structure when playing against a team that defends in numbers."

Despite the win, the team is aware that there is room for improvement. "This win has given us plenty of things to work on, especially around our structure and positional play," said the Coach. "We’ll be going back to basics in training and aiming to get better every week."

Senior Men: Narrow Victory Over Pinnacle FC

In what was a thrilling match, the Senior Men’s team secured a 1-0 win over Pinnacle FC in their fourth game of the season. The match was tightly contested from start to finish, with both sides demonstrating excellent organisation and skill.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams enjoying spells of possession and creating chances. However, it was the home side who broke the deadlock just five minutes before halftime when Mitchell Beer rose above the crowd to score a powerful header from a corner taken by Ed Galea.

With a slender lead at the break, the team made some tactical adjustments to tighten up defensively and continue pushing for a second goal. The midfield trio of Brad Bond, Rohan Wilson, and Deejae Griffiths combined well to create opportunities in the second half, though the opposition was unable to capitalise on their limited chances.

"Overall, we defended well and created enough to win the game," said coach Adam Gambrill. "We’ve still got work to do, but this was an important three points."

In terms of injuries, both Ed Galea and Mitchell Beer picked up minor knocks during the game, but the Coach is hopeful they’ll be fit for the next match.

Man of the Match for the third consecutive week was Mitchell Beer, who not only scored the game-winning goal but also put in a solid defensive performance. "Mitch was outstanding again. He led from the front and made crucial contributions at both ends of the field," said the Coach.

The Senior Men’s team will look to build on this narrow victory as they head into their first home game of the season this weekend against Millthorpe.
