The Pythons started Saturday down on numbers but had a convincing 66-22 win over Trangie Tigers.
Canowindra made the road trip to Trangie for Round 4 of their Oilsplus North Cup Men's 1st Grade campaign, and club president Oliver Groves described Saturday’s contest as a cracker.
“The boys really turned up,” he said.
Andy Townsend ran in three tries and added a conversion for good measure as the Pythons piled on the points in the away game.
“He stood up today and really made the most of it,” Groves said of Andy’s efforts.
He paid tribute to Canowindra’s forward pack for showing up and to the team for staying on the field and putting in the minutes so the side had the numbers.
“It was an unreal game to be part of, really enjoyable on the field,” Groves said.
The win is the Pythons’ first for the season, after a Round 1 bye, tough contest against Yeoval in Round 2 and narrow loss to Blayney in Round 3.
Blayney’s win was a narrow in – 29-27 – and Groves could see his team building in their efforts in that contest.
“We’ve picked up mistakes from last week, got on top of it at training and it showed today,” he said post-match.
“It was an unreal game to be part of : it felt really good from the middle, the forwards did really well and the backs made the most of it when they had the opportunity and that was really good to see.”
This weekend: The Pythons have a home game, with the seniors kicking off against Wellington Redbacks at 2pm at the oval.
Save the date: Canowindra Pythons celebrate 50 years of the local rugby union club this year.
The celebration dinner is on Saturday 12 July, with local legends Cranbury Jam providing music for the big event.
Tickets on sale soon.
