In an exciting clash this past weekend, the Cowra Magpies secured a well-earned win against the Grenfell Goannas, securing an overwhelming score by the final bell of 44-12.

The Magpies came out strong, executing their game plan to perfection in the opening 40 minutes. First grade coach Phil Ingram said the Magpies completed their sets with precision, making it difficult for Grenfell to break through. A combination of solid ball movement, excellent forward play, and sharp tactical kicking saw Cowra race to a comfortable lead. Key players such as Matt Frazer and Stephen Ingram, the seasoned front-rowers, were instrumental in setting the tone with their powerful carries, with Ingram also adding a bit of flair with his ball movement that caught the Goannas off guard.

“We really stuck to our game plan,” said Mr Ingram, “Matt and Stevie led the way for us, with strong carries and movement, and Ricky [Whitton] did his job well, putting Grenfell under pressure by kicking them into the corners.”

Ricky Whitton played a key role in the game, converting successfully on 6 out of 8 attempts, as well as bagging two tries. His accurate kicking and composure under pressure were key to maintaining the Magpies' dominance. “We were really happy with our first-half performance. It was some of the best football we've played this season.” said Mr Ingram, giving credit to the team’s early discipline and execution.

Mr Ingram also singled out the performance of Morea Philip, Magpies fullback responsible for three tries against the Goannas.

However, the second half told a different story with Grenfell enjoying more possession and opportunities, they fought hard to close the gap, managing to level the score in the second half. Mr Ingram acknowledged the challenge, noting, “We got a bit complacent in the second half. We allowed them to get into the game, and we can’t afford to give any team a sniff like that.”

Despite the second-half slip-up, the Magpies managed to hold their ground, with a solid defensive effort ensuring that Grenfell’s late surge didn’t result in a comeback. "It was a bit of a battle in the second half, but overall, we were happy with the win,” Mr Ingram added, “We’ve got to be more ruthless when we’re on top and not let teams back into the game.”

Looking ahead, the Magpies are focusing on refining their game plan, particularly in maintaining their intensity throughout the full 80 minutes. “We’ve got to keep improving every week,” Mr Ingram said. “Next week we’re up against Cargo at home, and while Cargo struggled last year, this is a new season, and we’re taking it one game at a time. Anyone can win a game of footy.”

With the support of the home crowd, the Magpies are hopeful of another strong performance next Sunday, on Mother's Day, where the Magpies will face off against Cargo, at Sid Kallas Oval.
