As parents and teachers, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a deep and meaningful faith. The Catholic Liturgical Calendar offers us a beautiful way to journey with our families through the life of Christ, helping us to understand his love, his sacrifice and the hope of salvation. Each season of the liturgical year invites us to focus on a different aspect of our faith, shaping our hearts and homes in the rhythm of God’s grace.
Advent (Preparation & Hope)
Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical year, a time of waiting and preparing for the coming of Jesus. It is a season of hope, symbolised by the Advent wreath and its candles, each representing a growing anticipation for Christ’s birth.
Christmas (Joy & Light)
Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth, when God became one of us. We use this season to teach our children about generosity, love and the true meaning of Christmas, keeping Christ at the center of all festivities.
Ordinary Time (Growth & Discipleship)
Following Christmas and later after Easter, Ordinary Time is a period of growth. The focus is on Jesus’ teachings, miracles and our own journey of faith. We can use this time to instill daily faith habits, encouraging our children to pray, read Scripture and practice acts of kindness and service.
Lent (Repentance & Renewal)
Lent is a solemn season of reflection, fasting and penance, calling us to draw closer to God through sacrifice and prayer. It is a powerful time to teach children about self-discipline, gratitude and the importance of reconciliation.
Easter (Victory & New Life)
Easter is the heart of our faith, the joyful celebration of Christ’s Resurrection and victory over sin and death. It is a time of renewal, hope and rejoicing, reminding others that Jesus’ love is everlasting and that we, too, are called to live in the joy of the Resurrection.
Pentecost (Mission & the Holy Spirit)
Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, empowering them to spread the Gospel.
At St Raphael’s, we believe each season of the liturgical calendar offers us a moment to deepen our faith and teach others about God’s unwavering love. By walking through these seasons together, we build a faith-filled home where Christ is always at the center.
