Council approve budget variation for CBD night work and light restoration

In noting a progress report on the work at the May council meeting, councillors also approved an additional $37,422 for the night work and $9,302 for the refurbishment of the lights, which includes removal and transport to Sydney for restoration.

Director of Environmental Services, Kate Alberry said the night works, which begin Monday, June 1, would only involve demolition.

"The concreting still has to be done during the day, the Telstra pits needs to be done during the day so there's still a significant amount of work to be done during the day however it may be more convenient to the shoppers and the people accessing the shops to not have the excavator running all day for the next week," she said.

Councillor Bruce Miller said he wants to see the project finished as soon as possible.

"I don't want this project to be slowed down" he said.

"It's been really well managed, I think we should enable it to proceed as quick as we can.

"All of us know that is the busiest part of our CBD without a doubt and if we can get all of that noise and all of that dust and all of that sort of stuff sorted in that week, doing it after hours makes perfect sense to me for the extra amount of money it is going to cost. It's a sensible solution."

Ms Alberry said the pavement lights found on Kendal Street are "significant historical finds".

"There are five cast iron pavement lights in Kendal Street, two were already exposed and during the works contractors exposed three more," she said.

"It's interesting to note that there is a blanket heritage order on these lights in Sydney CBD to ensure that they are kept in place and are refurbished."

Cr Miller said the lights are worthy of being refurbished.

"It's incumbent on us to do that," he said.
