NSW fires: Hazardous air quality in Orange ranks as one of the worst in NSW

Smoke from the looming Gospers Mountain blaze was again pushed across the Central Tablelands thanks to an easterly breeze that ramped up at about 9pm on Monday night.

As a result, the Air Quality Index for the region was on Tuesday morning at 512, which is listed as 'hazardous' on the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) website.

Orange's visibility on the index is rated as the worst in NSW on Tuesday morning, with a rating of 444 while Bathurst's overall quality is well above the hazardous level, ranking at 548 to be the worst in the state.

The DPIE said everyone, especially people with heart or lung disease, should avoid outdoor exertion and stay inside as much as possible.

"If you have symptoms rest and use your reliever medicine," the warning states.

"If symptoms persist, seek medical advice."

Meanwhile, the largest bushfire burning in the region is the Gospers Mountain fire which has reached 401,754 hectares and is burning within six kilometres of Mount Piper Power Plant.

An emergency warning was issued for this fire on Monday afternoon, however this has since been downgraded to advice level.

Other fires include the 140,827 hectare Green Wattle Creek bushfire which is burning out-of-control through the Kanangra-Boyd National Park, and the 2221 hectare Palmers Oaky bushfire.
