Two successors in fact.
Mick Curtale (300) was crowned this year's winner on Sunday, heading off Jacob Moodie (304) to secure a victory by four strokes in the four-day event.
Kirwan (305), who finished in third a shot behind Moodie, still managed a veterans' trophy for his effort, as his run of 13 straight victories came to an end.
Sunday morning's play was finely poised, with Curtale a stroke ahead of Moodie, with Kirwan only one further back himself.
However, over the course of the day's play, it was Curtale who held the most consistent form, pulling ahead of Moodie and Kirwan after the 15th to ensure victory.
Curtale was thrilled to get the result.
"It's pretty special....I've been trying to do it for a long time," Curtale said.
"Pete's been the best golfer at the club for the last 13 years and he's always made it very difficult for us to beat him... he never went away yesterday.
"He was always in the hunt up until the last couple of holes."
Curtale also paid tribute to the second-placed Moodie, who he described as a "very good mate," and his caddy for the tournament, Emerson Baratto.
"Emerson did an excellent job," the versatile sportsman said.
"That's the first time he's ever caddied."
"Especially through the first weekend, when I hurt my back on the first day, and we just battled as hard as we could, and said if we just stay in the tournament, get into the second weekend, then we'll see how we go."
For his part, Kirwan said he was pleased for Curtale and Moodie that they stood up, noting it was one of the closely-contested finishes the tournament has had in a long while.
"It's good to see them guys step up and take the title...They're going to be good for a number of years to come," Kirwan said.
"This year's been the tightest it's been for 20 years, I'd say, going into the final day."
