Daniel Goricki, 33, was before the court charged with common assault and destroy or damage property. He also received a Community Corrections Order for 12 months for a breach of bond.
Mr Goricki's solicitor, Ms Collings, said her client admits he has a drinking problem.
"An alcohol problem is an underlying issue," Ms Collings said.
"He has abided by previous conditions... he realised he has a drinking problem but he hasn't had any education about it."
According to the police facts, about 9.30pm, February 2, 2019, Goricki attending the victim's residence, along with other family members, to celebrate the victim's birthday.
Both Goricki and the victim consumed alcohol and, towards the end of the evening, they engaged in a verbal argument.
It's alleged Goricki grabbed the victim around the neck area when a struggle ensured, resulting in the victim receiving scratches to their neck and cheek.
The victim's partner then intervened. Goricki pushed the victim, causing them to fall to the ground.
The victim retreated to their bedroom before Goricki punched the bedroom door, causing significant damage. Police attended the residence before Goricki was placed under arrest and formally cautioned.
As a result of the incident, Goricki breached the conditions of a Section 9 bond relating to an incident in 2017 where Goricki resisted an officer in the execution of duty.
In ruling, Magistrate Michael O'Brien said Goricki needed an intervention for his excessive alcohol use.
"This is not his first foray into the criminal justice system," Magistrate O'Brien said.
"I hear that all the time... they've all seen the light as they stare into the abyss of full time imprisonment.
"This is a matter crying out for intervention. These are serious offences, what distinguishes you is how you respond to it."
