Council recently approved installation of one-way signs for the avenue that is popular with parents dropping-off and picking-up children from St Raphael’s Catholic School in Liverpool Street, Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West said.

“This area suffers from traffic congestion culminating in safety concerns for students during school times particularly, so we are installing traffic signs to direct all traffic coming-off Liverpool St onto Poignand Ave in a northerly direction onto Macquarie St,” Cr West said.

“To ensure the school community are kept fully-aware of these changes, we are also introducing a regular communication program with St Raphael’s to help alleviate congestion on Poignand Ave,” Cr West added.

To ascertain the impact of the new traffic rules, Council will monitor parking behaviour in Poignand Ave for at least six months and provide a report on the changes to Cowra Traffic Committee.

“We have taken this decision after careful consideration, and we believe that these changes balance the needs of residents, businesses, parents, and through-traffic at this busy intersection,” Cr West concluded.

Other traffic committee recommendations adopted by Council included moving the loading zone on the south-western corner of Kendal and Macquarie Sts from Kendal to Macquarie St with a pedestrian refuge to be constructed on the northern arm of the intersection of Binni Creek Rd and Comerford St.
