The baggy maroons begin their campaign against Parkes Colts this Saturday, their first game since being ousted in the Cowra District Competition preliminary final at Holman Oval last season.
While the club hasn’t recruited many new faces, captain Ben Schaefer will be pleased with the return of second grade Player of the Year Nick Traves to his line up.
Traves has helped strengthen and rejuvenate Canowindra’s second grade side in recent years, and is now happy to return to the top grade.
He will likely partner his brother, Brendan, with the new ball and has shown ability to hit runs in the middle to lower order.
Experienced clubman Craig Carpenter has also committed to the top grade for 2017-2018, after a season in seconds, an added boost for the maroons.
Top order batsmen Schaefer, Peter Guthrie, Josh Carmody and Brendan Traves will have most responsibility with the willow, while the Traves brothers, Wasim Babar and young quick Joe Coady form a strong pace cartel with Carmody one of a few spin options.
Canowindra’s opposition this week, Parkes Colts, were defeated in the opening round’s Parkes Derby, resulting in a thumping 91-run win to Cambridge Cats.
Colts boasts a damaging bowling unit led by Phil Dunford and Brent Tucker as well as the Smith twins, Myles and Blake.
The game starts from 1.30pm this Saturday at Parkes’ Woodward Oval.
