Work is expected to last three weeks and will involve the removal of about 400m of existing pavement and replacement with new asphalt.

The stretch of road includes both the Young Road and Boorowa Road intersections. 

Traffic controllers will direct drivers to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, however Cowra Council Director of Infrastructure and Operations George Ridley said queuing is expected at peak times.

“It will always be operating with one lane open. There will be congestion at peak times and some queuing,” Mr Ridley said.

“It will be traffic controlled. We ask people to be patient. It’s for a limited time and it’s a job that has to be done.”

Mr Ridley, who described the work as substantial, said it has been in the pipeline since the main street had its upgrade a few years ago.

“We were trying to get it done then. It’s just been a matter of getting funding sorted,” he said.

In an effort to minimise traffic congestion, work on the road was delayed to allow for the October long weekend and Bathurst 1000 weekend.

Preliminary works to remove traffic islands took place on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Council will mark lines and replace traffic islands when the roadwork is complete.

Students beginning their HSC on Monday, who travel from west of the Cowra Bridge, are reminded to take into account the expected delays.

In a post on the Cowra High School Facebook Page, the school warned students that roadworks aren’t a circumstance to claim illness or misadventure if late.

Participants of night tennis are also being informed to use the low level bridge parking while the roadwork takes place.
