Played at the Gabba, Hughes smashed seven fours and four sixes on his way to a career high Twenty20 score, setting up the Sixers’ third win of this summer’s Big Bash League in the process.
On the cusp of victory in the final over, Hughes chopped on to Brisbane all-rounder Ben Cutting, giving Heat a sense they could conjure up something miraculous, but Sean Abbott sealed the win with two balls spare handing Heat their first loss of BBL|06.
Hughes’ 85 takes his BBL|06 run tally to 155 from three innings and to fourth on the leading runscorers of the tournament so far, behind Chris Lynn (211), Tim Paine (204) and Brad Hodge (174).
The Sixers are placed third on the ladder having registered three wins and two losses from their five games.
The Sixers host Perth Scorchers this Tuesday at the SCG from 7.10pm.
