Police from Blue Mountains Local Area Command are investigating the circumstances that led to the semi-trailer careering into a power pole before crashing into the front yard of a home in Springwood.
The accident ruptured a gas main, which caused a significant leak, causing all west bound lanes of the highway to be closed for one and a half hours.
Police also had to evacuate residents from another two nearby homes.
The accident happened at about 11.30pm on Monday when the semi-trailer heading east crashed into a power pole near Stuart Road.
The power pole was cut in half, and the semi continued down the highway before stopping in the front yard of a home, just meters from the front of the house, on the corner of the highway and Boland Road.
The driver, was not hurt and was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory blood and urine samples.
The man, woman and child inside the home were not hurt.
Power to the homes near the crash was being worked on yesterday.
The gas main has been clamped and was expected to be repaired.
