Goannas have tough day at Manildra

This Saturday at Boorowa, the Woodbridge Cup will be playing their annual representative matches and as a result there will be a general bye in the competition.

The First Grade and Ladies League Tag teams will take on the George Tooke Shield whilst the Under 18s clash with a Canberra Regional outfit and the Under 20s League Tag come up against a team from the Murray Cup (Victorian Border Team).

In the First-Grade match Grenfell will be represented by Caleb Haddin, Michael Smith, and Nate Wilson whereas Angus Buckland will be lining up in the second row for the Under 18s.

Please see the Woodbridge Cup Facebook for more details about the Rep games and match times.

The Goannas next outing will be at Lawson Oval on Sunday, 25 May when they host the Condobolin Rams in First Grade and League Tag with the Youth League boys having a bye.

Last Saturday the Goannas travelled over to Manildra and it was a tough day on the field and below are the match reports.

YOUTH LEAGUE

Both teams were down on numbers but it was the Rhinos who were able to take advantage of the open spaces and they ran out comfortable winners by 32-4. Angus Buckland was the try scorer for the Goannas and he was one of the best for his team with Mav Mooney picking up the Player’s Player and other players to stand out were Luke Frendo, Marco Joyce, and Harry Forde.

LEAGUE TAG

The Girlannas struggled to handle Manildra half-back Molly Hoswell in the early stages of this match but they did well to hold the premiership favourites to a 12 nil lead at half-time.

In the second half the Girlannas made a number of handling errors and this gave the Rhinos good field position and they took full advantage by running out 36-6 winners. A highlight for the Girlannas in the second half was a long distance try to Ella McCrae after a break by Player’s Player Chelsea Harveyson. Best for Grenfell were Ella, Chelsea, Zoe Gavin, and Emily Brenner.

FIRST GRADE

The Goannas were on the board early through an Isaac Jones try and Chase McFarlane conversion. After a tight opening the scores were 6 all at the 20 minute mark and the Goannas appeared to be the slightly better team.

At this point the Rhinos clicked it up a gear and in the next 40 minutes they scored 10 tries to blow the Goannas off the park.

The final score read Rhinos 66 Goannas 6. For the Goannas Jim Hazell tried hard and was voted in as the Player’s Player whilst other good performers on the day were Charlie Frendo, Michael Smith, Tia Sauruarua, and Chase McFarlane.
