Dr Hopkins, who is based at the Cowra Agricultural Research and Advisory Station, gave lectures at SDAU and provided guidance on the post-graduate programs of 23 students enrolled at the College of Food Science and Engineering, where he holds a Visiting Professor role.
As part of the trip, he also visited one of the beef abattoirs of the KerChin group where he discussed a number of issues with plant management.
The KerChin group operates four abattoirs and have their own restaurant.
The Chinese beef industry has significant issues with supply and also reducing the level of dark-cutting beef and both these issues bode well for continued export of high quality Australian beef to China.
This abattoir was near the Inner Mongolian city of Tongliao.
From here Dr Hopkins spent time at a large farm near Huolinguole (close to the Monogolian border), running 10,000 Angus and Simmental cattle, many purchased from Australia.
The owner also runs 2,500 sheep and a large number of native horses.
