With brand new uniforms and oversized backpacks in tow, the students had their first day of school this week.
Six kindergarten students – Ryder Muddle, Will O'Reilly, Toby Woodhouse, Lily Yeo, Grace Shepard and Gabby Bryant – said they were keen to start at St Raphael’s Catholic School.
Lily said she was looking forward to food technology.
“I’m going to do cooking,” she said.
“I like to make cakes.”
She said she expected St Raphael's to be like “a big church” and hopes to do some craft and make new friends.
She also said she was all ready for the big day.
“I have my uniform, and my shoes and my socks,” she said.
Ryder Muddle, who hopes to be a truck driver when he is older, said he’s looking forward to the social side of school.
“Playing with my friends,” he said.
When asked what he is keen to learn, Ryder said “not much”.
More than one hundred kindergarten students have started in schools across Cowra and the villages this week, with Ryder, Will, Toby, Lily, Grace and Gabby joining 41 other kindies at St Raphael’s.
45 fresh faces have started at Mulyan Public School, while 65 have walked through the gates of Cowra Public School.
Seven kindies have started at Holmwood Public School, four at Gooloogong PS, two at both Greenethorpe and Woodstock Public Schools and one at Holman Place.
Meanwhile, there are also two new faces at Koorawatha Public School.
Koorawatha’s new principal, Vanessa Benett, said smaller schools can be great for kindergarten students as they develop close relationships to older students and connect with other schools.
“The little ones are trying to learn to fill their shoes,” she said.
“It can have a really positive impact and there’s not as much anxiety because the school’s not as large or widespread.”
Wyangala Dam PS is not expecting any new arrivals this year.
