The week recognises and pays tribute to the more than 6 million Australians who donate their time to assist their communities each year.
The New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) want to celebrate this and say 'thanks' to the thousands of dedicated NSW SES volunteers who sacrifice countless hours to help protect their local communities.
NSW SES Lachlan Region Controller Bob Evans said National Volunteer Week is a time to recognise the commitment and effort of NSW SES volunteers.
"We want to say 'Thank You,' to the amazing volunteers of the NSW SES, not just this week but every week. From the volunteers in orange directing operations to those in the field, all serving the community, we thank you for your dedication, commitment and integrity," Mr Evans said.
"These last few weeks have been the busiest in the NSW SES history with over 21,000 requests for assistance received in less than ten days. The willingness from our volunteers to not only help their own communities, but to further travel to other areas of the state affected by storms and floods, is what makes the NSW SES such a special volunteer organisation."
The core role of the NSW SES is to respond to flood and storm events. However, there are many other support roles which assist other emergency service agencies including rescue and community first responders.
This makes the NSW SES a highly versatile and diverse volunteer organisation, welcoming members from all walks of life.
"The best part about volunteering is the feeling of knowing a difference has been made; when you've been able to provide assistance to someone in need.
"There's nothing quite like that," Mr Evans said.
As a NSW SES volunteer the opportunities are endless.
