Nominations are now being sought from the Cowra community.
Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West has announced the award opening and urged the community to again get behind this program.
“Every year we ask that we recognise the wonderful volunteers in our community,” Cr West said.
“There is an immense body of voluntary work within the Shire and it’s important that the contributors know it is appreciated,” Cr West said.
The Cowra Shire Australia Day awards are in their 28th year, established by the Rotary Club of Cowra in 1987.
“An extraordinary number of good works have been appreciated during this time,” Cr West said.
“The award program has evolved from humble beginnings, initially celebrating ‘Citizen of the Year’.”
The community nominated several young people during the subsequent years requiring a new ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ award be included.
In 2001 the addition of the ‘Dr Warren Whiley Memorial Award’ occurred, focussing on Arts,
Culture and Citizenship, a joint initiative of the Cowra VIEW Club and Rotary Club of Cowra.
The growing success of the awards led to the further addition of the ‘Community Group of the Year’.
The 2015 program includes each of those Awards. Encouraging and supporting those who make our Shire a better place to live is the purpose of the Awards program.
Nomination forms are available at Cowra Shire Council Chambers and on the Council website
www.cowracouncil.com.au.
“Please consider nominating a community member or group who have significantly enhanced life in Cowra Shire this year,” Cr West said.
