The awards presentation is scheduled to begin at 1.15pm AEDT and run for about an hour.
The virtual ceremony will be hosted by by Her Excellency Professor Kate Warner AC Governor of Tasmania and Premier Peter GutweinPremier and streamed live on this website of publisher ACM, official media partner of the 2021 Australian of the Year Awards (see below for a list of the websites hosting the live stream).
The 17 Tasmanians in the running to be named the state's Local Hero, Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian or Australian of the Year for 2021 include a 64-year-old physician working to assist in the diagnosis of dementia and an 18-year-old Kindred man who attempted to become the youngest person to circumnavigate Australia solo by plane and worked tirelessly to raise awareness of youth suicide.
The parents of retired AFL star Nick Riewoldt are also in the running to be named the state's next Tasmanian Australians of the Year.
After their 26-year-old daughter Maddie died in 2015 of aplastic anaemia, a bone marrow failure syndrome, the husband-and-wife pair, together with their sons Nick and Alex, founded Maddie Riewoldt's Vision.
It funds medical research towards a cure for bone marrow failure syndromes, and through the tireless efforts of the Riewoldts, has managed to secure funding from the Victorian government to establish the first National Centre of Research Excellence in Bone Marrow Biology in the Asia Pacific region.
The award recipients in each category will then join other state and territory winners as finalists in the annual national Australian of the Year Awards announcement on January 25, 2021.
