Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke officially announced the creation of a petition at Cowra Hospital on Friday morning.
Joining her at the announcement was Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West, Deputy Mayor, Cr Judi Smith and Councillors Ray Walsh and Michael Nobes.
Ms Cooke said Cowra and surrounding districts deserve an updated hospital.
“It’s the next stage in a long, running battle to get the facility that this community and the 13,000 residents of this district need and deserve,” she said.
“We are here with a petition, it’s addressed to the NSW Parliament, the Premier and the Ministry of Health and what it is really saying is don’t forget about us, we are important, we know that this is the number one health priority for the Cootamundra electorate.”
Cr West said Ms Cooke had the full backing of Cowra Council.
“The time has come to now upgrade it and build a new one,” he said.
“Council is happy to be able to support Steph Cooke in launching the petition to encourage the bureaucrats in the state government to provide a new hospital for Cowra.”
Ms Cooke said 10,000 signatures are needed for it to be presented and debated in Parliament and recognises there is still a lot of work to be done.
“If it comes down to that and I’ve got to get down on the floor of Parliament and have a debate about whether this is important, whether this should be a priority for any government, than I’m all for that,” she said.
“A new hospital from start to finish has got numerous steps involved and I continue to have conversations behind the scenes with health infrastructure, with the Western Health District.
“I can’t express how wonderful it is to have the support of Mayor Bill West and the rest of the Council.
“I just won’t let up, I won’t give up until we get this facility we deserve.”
