Goannas give their all before bumper crowd

Last Saturday at Lawson Oval the Grenfell Goannas hosted the Cowra Magpies in what were perfect conditions for both players and spectators.

On the field Cowra came away with wins in League Tag (18-4) and First Grade (44-16) whilst the Grenfell Youth League boys who were down on numbers due to injuries and work commitments had to forfeit their match to the Magpies.

Off the field there was a bumper crowd and the club celebrated their Ladies Day with a large turnout of Ladies joining in on the festivities. As part of the Ladies Day our League Tag girls played in pink jerseys and they looked great.

The special jerseys and shorts were sponsored by CRB Shearing, Major Mix Concrete, and JMC Concrete Pumping, the Goannas would like to thank these businesses for their support.

There were also a number of other people who helped make the Ladies Day a success and in particular the committee want to acknowledge the efforts of the Berry family who played a big part in organising the day.

The Goannas are receiving good crowd support this year and although the First Grade boys are yet to taste victory they want supporters to stick with them as they working hard to achieve that first win. Following are the match reports from Saturday.

LEAGUE TAG

Cowra after tries in the 3rd and 22nd minutes of play went to the break leading 10 nil. The Girlannas fought back just after half-time with a try to Zoe Gavin but the Magpies responded quickly with a try of their own to maintain their ascendancy and take a 14-4 lead.

A try to Cowra in the final minute of play saw them take the match 18-4 but the Girlannas shouldn’t be disappointed with their performance as they were solid against a team who are definite premiership threats. Best for Grenfell were Ella McRae, Breanna Anderson (Players Player), Chelsea Harveyson, Zoe Gavin, and Emily Brenner.

After the opening 15 minutes of play the Goannas were down 22 nil due to some sloppy defence and some good attacking play from a Cowra team who also dominated possession in this period.

The Magpies looked like running up a cricket score but to their credit the Goannas fought back and they were able to hold Cowra to 10 all in the second half.

The Magpies eventually ran out 44 to 16 winners against a Goannas outfit who had little possession with ill-discipline resulting in a 9-1 penalty count in favour of the visitors. Grenfell’s points came from tries to Brodie Loader, Isaac Jones, and Manu Katoa whilst Chase McFarlane knocked over two conversions.

Ty Ashe deservedly picked up the Player’s Player and he received good support from Wade Newham, Michael Smith, Isaac Jones, and Brodie Loader.

The First Try-Scorer winners on the day were the Bowling Club kitchen ladies who picked up the $390 for League Tag and Dylan Troy who claimed the First Grade $690.

This Saturday the Goannas make the tough road trip to Manildra to take on an in-form Rhinos club. Youth League kicks off at 12.20pm, League Tag at 1.40pm, and First Grade at 3.00pm.
