Hilltops declared drought affected

The Hilltops has been declared as being drought affected and in drought with Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging local farmers who are affected to apply for assistance that's become available.

As of 27 April, 2025 Young, Boorowa and Harden have been declared as being drought affected with Jugiong and the surrounding area currently in drought.

Grenfell, Cowra, Candowindra, Eugowra, Forbes and Parkes are declared as non drought areas.

The latest forecast figures from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have revealed that a large part of the Cootamundra electorate, including the Hilltops Council area is currently drought affected or in drought.

Though the majority of Hilltops LGA is drought affected it is Jugiong and the neighbouring Cootamundra Gundagai LGA that is the most drought impacted Local Government Area in New South Wales with 71 per cent of the region in drought, with the other 29 per cent categorised as drought affected.

While local producers wait for a late break in the weather, Ms Cooke is reminding those impacted that her office is here to help.

“Our farmers are smart and resilient, we saw that in 2019,” Ms Cooke said.

“But there’s no denying that in recent years, producers have been faced with worsening economic pressures, workforce shortages, and regulatory challenges.

“That’s why I’m encouraging anyone who may need support to know what services and programs are available to them.”

Farmers can visit www.droughthub.nsw.gov.au for advice on how to prepare for and manage drought, as well as information on what financial assistance is currently available.
