Cowra police are making regular visits to the saleyards every second Friday for its prime sheep sales, not only to check compliance and documentation but to mingle with the town’s rural community.
Cowra Police Inspector Adam Beard said there’s a rural crime push across the entire region.
“What it does is give police an opportunity to engage with the rural community when we normally wouldn’t perhaps have that opportunity,” Inspector Adam Beard said.
“In doing this, what we’ve found is that members of the community will often report crimes to police which they would normally allow go unreported.”
The saleyards will be there area of focus for Cowra police.
“Regular attendance at the saleyards will be a part of our strategy,” Inspector Beard said.
“It’s very important for us to capture reports of crime, such as illegal hunting, so we can target our patrols to the right areas.”
