Hyne was waiting for scan results on Tuesday after his leg twisted awkwardly under his body in National Rugby Championship clash in Armidale on Saturday.

The 23-year-old suffered a dislocated knee cap and there were fears he had damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, which could force Hyne out of action for up to nine months.

It would be a cruel blow for Hyne less than a month after he agreed to a one-year contract extension to stay at the Brumbies for the 2018 season.

But Vikings coach Tim Sampson has backed the hard-working flanker to bounce back if injury ruins his hopes of launching his Super Rugby career next year.

A ruptured anterior cruciate ligament would keep Hyne on the sideline until June if he requires a reconstruction.

???"He's a tough bugger and strong-minded, so I know he's going to bounce back," Sampson said.

"He's going to be a huge loss for us in the NRC season. He's got a massive work rate and I think he's the leading tackler in the competition this year.

"I've had a bit to do with him over the last couple of years and when you coach someone at club level and NRC, it doesn't make it easier when injuries like this happens.

"I'm disappointed for him and his family were at the game as well - they took it hard.

"But Ben has a lot of determination and I'm sure that whatever the result is with this scan, he'll look to work hard to get back as soon as possible."

Hyne only needs to look at his teammates for inspiration if he is out of action for an extended period.

Brumbies and Vikings teammate Lausii Taliauli ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January and missed the entire Super Rugby season.

But the flying winger is nearing a comeback and could play for the Vikings within two weeks if he is cleared for his first game since January 28.

The Vikings will play the top-of-the-table and NRC newcomers Fijian Drua at Viking Park on Friday night, with Sampson keen to end a run of back to back losses.

Lolo Fakaosilea could be added the starting XV to replace Hyne for the Vikings' first clash against the Fiji side.

"Fiji are improving every week, which is scary," Sampson said.

"Hopefully we can try to find some weak links somewhere, but they are a pretty well-balanced team and take every opportunity they get."
