While residents in neighbouring Young and Canowindra go to the polls on Saturday, Cowra residents will be enjoying Saturday morning sport or winding down after another hard week at work.
Our neighbours are voting for new councils after the State Government's amalgamation process which saw Young become the centre of a larger Hilltops Council and Canowindra remain in Cabonne after a successful court challenge from that council.
The State Government had proposed Cabonne be amalgamated with Orange and Blayney Councils.
While Cabonne has operated effectively for years representing Canowindra and a number of smaller communities, including Molong, Yeoval, Cumnock and rural areas surrounding Orange, Hilltops has a real challenge on its hands.
After attending a candidate forum in Young attended by all but one of the candidates standing for Hilltops Council the first thought that came to mind was dysfunctional.
Candidates for the new Hilltops are used to representing their own communities of Boorowa, Young and Cootamundra, not a much larger area.
It will be interesting to sit back and witness how things develop just down the road.
Representing a constituency spread over such a large area and for numerous communities cannot be an easy thing.
Candidates need to stand for multiple reasons and causes as well as multiple communities.
Local Government representatives, from my observations of year’s of reporting on Cowra Shire Council, who stand on a single platform usually fail dismally.
They tend to do a lot more good, or at least appear to, on the outside looking in.

A little out of the way, you could be excused for thinking not much is happening at Cowra Airport.
Just this week one of the airport’s enterprises, Fly Oz,announced it will be training pilots for a Thai university, adding to what is becoming one of the growing number of new initiatives and businesses establishing at the airport.
Take a drive, if you have time, you won’t recognise the airport, it’s actually much busier than it was when we had an air service.
