As would be expected in a country town the size of Cowra, many rumours were generated as to who was responsible for and the motive behind the murders, one of the investigating officers said in a statement prepared for a Coroner’s inquest.
“Police found, in some cases, when making inquiries about a suspect, information was being passed on to the suspect,” police said.
“On a number of occasions people who gave information to police about certain individuals, for reasons best known to themselves, would then tell the individual they had been to the police.
“One of the most widely circulated rumours related to the victims being involved in the sale of drugs.”
Other than the drug use by Watmore police said there was no evidence to support these allegations.
