The event will take place at Peter Boyd’s property, Canimbla, and highlights will include a sheep handling demonstration by Scott Franklin in the new sheep yard facilities, as well as a tour of the automated ‘Canimbla’ lamb feedlot.
The field day will also focus on better ways to finish lambs and hit market specifications, the traceability of product, genetics and feed performance.
Field day host, Peter Boyd, will talk about his experience in developing the Canimbla operation to meet industry demands.
“We’ve been actively fine tuning our lamb enterprise over the last 10 years. By measuring the performance of our lambs we have been able to evaluate the changes we have made,” Peter Boyd said.
“The data we have developed has enabled our business to better engage industry professionals and adapt automation to achieve our production goals.”
According to Brett Littler from Central Tablelands Local Lands Services, the Canimbla operation is an example of the new automated feedlots that are popping up around the State to achieve higher growth rates, better feed utilisation and market specifications.
Also at the field day a representative from Leader Products will discuss electronic ear tags.
Brett Littler and Local Land Services Veterinarian Bruce Watt will be on hand to talk about the impacts of current seasonal conditions on animal production, feed digestibility and high density lamb production systems.
“We’ve got an excellent line up of speakers and there’ll be something in the day for all sheep producers,” said event organiser Casey Proctor, Senior Land Services Officer with Central Tablelands Local Land Services.
The field day will take place from 1pm - 4:30 pm at the Canimbla shearing shed and yards, opposite the main property entrance, approximately eight kilometres from Cowra on the Forbes Road.
