President Annette Lynch welcomed the gathering, including distinguished guests and the Australia Day Ambassador Deni Hines. A rousing rendition of the National Anthem, patriotic decorations on the tables and a typical Australian Menu set the scene.
The School Captains for 2016 were immaculate in their uniforms and most impressive. Toby Baker and Alana Ryan from Cowra High School and Anthony Day and Anna McNamara from Saint Raphaels spoke confidently and were a credit to their schools.
Rotary President Ian Donges introduced the joint winners of the Warren Whiley Memorial Award. In doing so, he gave an amusing description of episodes in Warren's life and the reason for this award.
Mrs Jean Whiley thanked Rotary for sponsoring the Award and congratulated the joint recipients Mary-anne Wright and Katrine Capps.
Chairman of the Australia Day Committee Councillor Bruce Miller then introduced Ambassador Deni Hines. She endeared herself to the audience by her friendliness and light hearted, relaxed manner, telling us a little of her experience growing up in this country and encouraging us to take every opportunity life offers.
The vote of thanks was given by Mayor Bill West endorsing Deni's sentiments, and it was apparent that the ambassador's visit had been most successful.
