Thirteen-year-old Connor Day won $100 for his poem Articulate Sky and a chance to go on ABC Local Radio.
Banjo Paterson was born on February 17, 1864 and to celebrate his birthday anniversary each year Central West Libraries, The Central Western Daily, and ABC Central West Radio announce the call for entries in the Banjo Paterson Writing Awards.
Since established in 1991 these awards aim to honour Banjo Paterson, a great Australian writer and favourite son of Orange, with a competition to foster short story or poetry writing with Australian content. Banjo is most famous for writing the ballad Waltzing Matilda and the poem The Man From Snowy River.
This year they had 83 Short Story entries, 54 Bush Poetry Entries, 59 Open Poetry Entries and 34 entries in the ABC Radio Children’s Writing Awards.
The Henry Lawson High School student has previously won awards for his writing.
In 2013 Connor was awarded first place in the Henry Lawson Festival of the Arts for his poem Dusk and actually received the bronze statuette of the Drover’s Wife, the first time a primary aged student received this prize.
He was also successful in receiving first prize in the 2014 Lambing Flat Writing Competition for junior secondary students.
Although he comes up with many intriguing creative writing ideas, Connor’s true love is soccer.
