The deal includes the SBS-owned World Movies service, which is currently only available on Foxtel, as well as the "Scandi noir" dramas The Killing and The Bridge, and Hatufim, the Israeli drama which was adapted into the hit US series Homeland.

Several SBS-produced Australian programs are also part of the deal, including the comedy series Wilfred, the Logie Award-winning comedy Housos and the critically-acclaimed miniseries Better Man.

Stan's CEO Mike Sneesby said the deal was part building a "value-for-money entertainment service that makes premium content accessible to everyone."

Stan has already announced a deal with Sony, including the rights to the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul and the critically acclaimed Amazon drama Transparent, and a deal with MGM, which includes the critically acclaimed drama Fargo and movies including such as The Hobbit.

Further program deals are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Under the terms of the SBS deal the World Movies library will be part of Stan's on demand library when the service launches. There will be no surcharge.

Stan's parent company StreamCo has not announced pricing, however most analysts expect it to launch around the $10 per month price point of US services such as Netflix and Hulu.

The World Movies service is already available as a linear channel on the Foxtel pay TV service.

The major US streaming player Netflix is also planning a 2015 launch in the Australian market.

Netflix announced a focus on the service's own "original content" titles, including Marco Polo, BoJack Horseman, All Hail King Julien and Grace and Frankie, a highly anticipated new US comedy series starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

It is understood Netflix, like Stan, is pursuing deals with local content suppliers.

The Nine Network and Fairfax announced earlier this year they would be joint venture partners in Stan, each contributing $50 million to the service.
