This was the scenario facing former Cowra local, Liz McConnon, who went to tie the knot in Port Douglas this month, only to have her wedding reception venue canned at the last minute thanks to Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita.
The raincheck turned out for the best though, and with a little help from family and friends, the bride and groom pulled together the perfect wedding in just two days, all while in lockdown.
The reception was originally planned at the wharf, but due to fears of structural damage and storm surge the local Council vetoed it, forcing the couple to find a new venue at really short notice.
Residual flood waters complicated matters even further, with the celebrant and the caterers struggling to make it through in time for the rescheduled nuptials.
Many people attending the wedding were originally from Cowra, including bridesmaids Lauren Wilson and Natasha May, and were lucky to get through before the cyclone took hold.
The couple managed to weather the storm, tying the knot on Sunday in a new venue and then enjoyed a well-earned 10-day honeymoon in Fiji.
"It was a little bit stressful but it turned out to be a beautiful day," Ms McConnon's sister Katie Craig said.
"The drama of the wedding was far worse than the cyclone."
Ms Craig said what could have been a disaster turned out to be a beautiful start to the couple's life together.
"I'm so proud of them and the way they pulled everything together in the end. They were very emotional but they soldiered on," Ms Craig said.
"When you've been together that long, nothing is really going to stand in your way."
While many say the increasing severity of these kinds of weather events can be put down to climate change, Ms Craig reckoned there was a different source at play here.
"Dad joked that there would be a cyclone and it looks like he might have jinxed it!" Ms Craig laughed
"It was really bad luck, but we made the best of it and made it into a beautiful day, it was meant to be in the end."
