While the feature race calendar is a very full one, the Megastar - the only Group 1 in NSW held at a venue other than our city track Wentworth Park - is always highly sought after by trainers of our leading sprinters looking for that last minute present for Christmas.
Good luck to all finalists next Thursday night. I'm looking forward to being trackside and I'd suggest you do likewise if you want to see some exciting races and have a great night out.
Prizemoney Increase
December 1 not only brought us within a month of ending what has been a very tumultuous year in the world, but for greyhound participants it was another significant day.
It was the day for more increases in prizemoney to our racing participants, with additional money being added to provincial events of 440m+, fifth grade and above, across the State.
Prizemoney for fifth grade events will increase by 35 percent to $3110, fourth grade will increase by 32 percent to $3290, and prizemoney for non-grade events will increase to $3430, an increase of just over 30 percent.
This news follows similar increases for provincial maiden events announced back on November 1.
Further announcements around more dispersal of prizemoney will be made in coming months.
First Starter Win
I am delighted to see more and more young people getting involved in our sport, and last Sunday we had another teenager who won a race with her first starter.
As soon as Abrial Taylor recently turned 18 she took out her trainer's licence, and she didn't need to wait long for her first winner, it arrived with her first starter, Boston Budgies, at Grafton last Sunday.
Abrial, who has just two greyhounds in work, is planning on studying veterinary science at university and becoming a veterinary nurse.
Congratulations Abrial and welcome to our wonderful industry.
Winner Winner
A great story this week around our TAB Phoenix competition. A voter's prize was offered with the winner sharing in the prizemoney our slot representative, Jack Smith's Jungle Deuce, wins in the race on December 18.
The lucky name drawn from more than 5000 entries was Cath Barrett, a local from Forbes where Jungle Deuce resides, and Cath admitted she only entered the competition after seeing a request for votes on Facebook from the Smiths. As she said, it proves she actually did vote for The Deuce.
