While pests can always be a bit of a problem around the Central West, currently there are major issues with pest control across the area. Mice in particular have been the subject of many conversations, media headlines and social media videos, as their numbers continue to grow.
Deb Spare from Central West Pest-Ex said that recent weather and conditions have made a perfect breeding season for pests. "With the summer being warm but not hot, and with plenty of rain and moisture, the pests are just thriving," she said.
"Everyone has seen the impact mice are having, especially with the big harvest farmers have had, but there has also been a big increase in spider numbers and termites.
"Termites are very active at the moment thanks to the moisture, and while they will slow down a bit over winter, the last thing you want is them nesting in your home."
Most pests around the home can often be controlled by some bug bombs or similar products, however Deb said it is important to get an annual inspection for safety and hygiene purposes.
"A yearly inspection is simply a must, especially when it comes to termites," she said. "The trick to getting rid of them is eradicating the queen so it's important to get check ups done and keep your family and home safe."
With over 30 years experience in the industry, Deb and Barry Spare certainly know what they are talking about when it comes to pests around your home and getting rid of them. From termites and ants through to mice and possums, they have seen and dealt with it all.
Deb said that there were a few tips they had to help people try and keep their home pest-free. "You should always put baits in safe bait stations to stop pets getting at them, and where possible use pet friendly baits that won't harm your pet if they happen to eat a poisoned pest," she said.
"Always place bait stations outside your home rather than inside, otherwise you are just encouraging them to come into your home, and secure stations so pests don't drag them away from where you want them placed.
"Finally make sure food in your home or animal feed in sheds are sealed in containers where possible and off the ground to limit contamination and remove food sources for pests."
