Along with his participation in numerous other sports, Reg's work at the track helped him become part of Cowra sporting legend.
Born in Canowindra in 1942, Reg went to school at St Edward's in Canowindra until the end of intermediate.
He then transferred to St Raphael's for the Leaving Certificate. On completion of his schooling, he went to Sydney to study accountancy.
After his father passed away, Reg returned to Cowra to study part-time and work, joining E. Steel and Co.
He completed his course and was accepted as a chartered accountant in 1965.
He continued working at Murphy and Steel for a couple more years before he went out on his own as R.T Cassidy Chartered Accountant.
It was around this time Reg became interested in bookmaking, taking over from the time Gordon Hennessy was finishing up. He bought all his boards and bag from Gordon.
For 15 years, he worked for Cowra Jockey Club, Cowra Greyhound Club and various organisations in the surrounding area until his retirement in 1990.
His return to Cowra saw Reg join the Cowra Apex Club, play for the Cowra Magpies between 1966 and 1972 and take part in squash, tennis, indoor cricket and bowls.
He married Carolyn in 1972. He was also an integral member of the Sportsperson of the Year Committee.
"Although I had known Reg for about 40 years, I never really came to appreciate his friendship and integrity until he came a judge on the Sportsperson of the Year panel in 1999," the late Cowra Guardian sports editor Barry Doyle OAM wrote after Reg's passing in 2006.
